Designed in the Classical Revival style and built in 1902 by I.W. Hellman as a wedding gift for his daughter, the new Mrs. Emanuel Heller, The Hellman Mansion emanates both strength and security, and is one of San Francisco’s most architecturally significant residences. When the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed much of San Francisco’s commercial area including Mr. Hellman’s Wells Fargo Nevada National Bank, The Hellman Mansion was unharmed by the catastrophe. Shortly after the disaster the doors of the bank reopened. This majestic Pacific Heights mansion has served as a stage for many important family and social gatherings over the last century including the main reception for delegates for the 1945 International Conference in San Francisco that created the United Nations.

LOCATION

This magnificent view mansion is situated one of the most prominent blocks of San Francisco’s prestigious Pacific Heights. This block and those surrounding are home to several of the Bay Area’s most revered and architecturally significant mansions and the finest of luxury cooperative apartment buildings. San Francisco’s finest private schools are within walking distance as are some of the city’s most fashionable boutiques, restaurants, and cafés. Famed Lafayette Park is just one block away.

RESIDENCE

The Hellman Mansion has been masterfully restored and updated. This estate enjoys a prestigious address on one of San Francisco’s best blocks. With over 11,500 square feet of grandly proportioned rooms, it has been seismically upgraded and extensively modernized with meticulous attention to detail and the preservation of architect Julius E. Krafft’s original masterpiece.

Main Level: The classically arched Grand Entrance has a hand-forged wrought-iron and etched-glass door. An elegant Foyer leads into the magnificent Great Hall, with an oversized fireplace framed in rich hardwood to complement the beautifully paneled walls, box-beamed ceilings, and herringbone hardwood floors. Flanking the south side of the great hall is a formal Living Room with beautifully proportioned coved ceilings molded intricately in plaster. This stunning room features a magnificent verdé marble fireplace encased in a mantle of beautifully handcrafted Indonesian mahogany. This rare wood is also used to accentuate architectural details throughout the entire room. Three pairs of south-facing grandly scaled French doors open to fresh-air Balconies. Flanking the north side of the great hall is a majestic Bay-view formal Dining Room, perfect for entertaining on a grand scale. This room features a stone fireplace, an elegant crystal chandelier, and impressive Gothic architectural detail. Magnificent arched doors lead to a limestone Terrace lined with classical balustrades enjoying unobstructed vistas to Alcatraz, Angel Island, Marin and beyond. This room also adjoins a large, full-service catering Kitchen featuring inlaid marble floors, slab-charcoal granite countertops, and an array of top-of-the-line commercial-grade appliances. This level also features an Elevator that services all four floors, Telephone Room, Powder Room, Cloakroom, and grand Study with hand-painted barrel ceilings and dramatic upholstered walls.

Second Living Level: The extravagant grand staircase to this level is bathed in natural light by a superbly handcrafted period stained-glass window.
